No matter if you are just starting out with a small flower garden or you are planting the agricultural equivalent to Mt. Everest, you will need seeds. Depending on the scope of your project and the plants you intend to grow, purchasing the seeds can prove to be quite expensive, though it doesn’t have to be. There are several ways that you can obtain seeds for little, if any cash outlay, if you know where to look.
Free or Cheap Garden Seed Sources – Where to Start
The first place you should look when locating your seeds is http://forums.gardenweb.com. This site is dedicated to offering its members the opportunity to swap seeds. There are no costs to join, no fees to participate, and the best part of all is that there is no seed you can’t find here. You can also swap live plants and knowledge with other hobbyists and is a “must-see” for any established or new gardener.
The next place you should scour is Craigs List. Even though Craigs List has received a ton of bad press lately, it is still one of the best places to find a great deal. You just have to be a little more scrupulous. Craigs list allows buyers and sellers to come together in one of the world’s largest flea market type atmospheres and most people walk away with a great feeling.
Next, check out www.freecycle .org. This site includes one of the most comprehensive listings of free stuff, including seeds of all sorts. Freecycle.org allows people to post thousands of free items in every nook and cranny of the U.S.
Lastly, visit your local nursery message boards to find out about seed exchanges in your area. These work much like gardenweb in that people bring their seeds in order to swap with others. These are usually free or have a nominal membership fee to join, but the savings will far outweigh the initial outlay. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/exchind/
No matter where you are or what you are growing, purchasing seeds shouldn’t be expensive. By looking into a few of the solutions above, you should be able to get whatever seeds you wish for free or close to it.
